Bruce Peninsula, Bruce Trail
Hiking the Bruce Trail is one of the main activities by locals and tourists. The Bruce Peninsula section of the trail is more rugged and scenic then in the rest of Ontario. The trail from Wiarton to Owen Sound is not bad but north of Wiarton it gets real rough especially north of Lion’s Head.
What we normally do is find a road access and walk for a couple of hours. This is how we got most of our photos. Best views from cliffs are at Springmount, Spirit Rock, Purple Valley, Cape Croker, Lion’s Head, Cyprus Lake Grotto.
Spring – Can be muddy but the flowers are great.
Summer – Summer can be quite hot but the views are worth the look.
Fall – Late summer and fall is a nice time to hike.
Winter - People do ski and snowshoe the Bruce Trail
During the summer short hikes at Springmount, Spirit Rock, Purple Valley Lion’s Head and Cyprus Lake Grotto are best. The Grotto is by far one of the best sections of the trail.
Along the trail you will come across many lookouts, crevasses, caves (marked and unmarked). Also, on the north Bruce you might come across our timid, shy Massissauga Rattle Snake. The poison is not potent and I have never seen one.
